HbA1c – Laboratory Tests for Diabetes

Posted on September 9th, 2025

On Friday 5th September the BBC ran a news story regarding errors in the laboratory diagnosis of diabetes – At least 55,000 people face new tests in diabetes error – BBC News

The CUH Pathology team would like to give assurance that our laboratories are unaffected.

The errors relate to Haemoglobin A1c results derived from an analyser supplied by Trinity Biotech; this device is not used in the CUH laboratories.

HbA1c results from the CUH pathology laboratories are carefully monitored and we are confident of their continued accuracy.

If you have any questions, comments or wish to speak to us about this, please don’t hesitate to contact the Pathology Service Desk.
