Blood tests are a crucial element in helping to diagnose and manage medical conditions. At York Street we have taken the decision to employ a phlebotomist to take patient bloods. We believe that this is an important service that our patients deserve to have. Many surgeries refer their patients to the local hospital for blood tests.
There are many demands on the time of our phlebotomist and the number of patients they can see for blood tests is limited. You may therefore be referred to Addenbrookes Hospital for your bloods to be taken.
Blood tests appointments are also available at the Extended Access Service during the evening and weekend at one of their hubs. Please speak to reception if you would like to book into this service. A blood form would need to be collected from the surgery prior to your appointment. For more information please visit www.openlater.co.uk
We ask that you telephone after 2 pm one week after any blood tests for the results. We no longer contact you with any minor abnormalities and it is your responsibility to phone to see if any action is required.
The doctor may leave a message to be passed on; or for more complicated problems we may ask that you make contact with the doctor that ordered the test. This may mean waiting a day or two if your doctor is not in the surgery but rest assured we would have made contact with you if there was a serious problem.
Please understand that our receptionists are not medically qualified and so cannot answer any questions about your results. However, you will find an explanation of why various blood tests are taken from Lab Tests Online… www.labtestsonline.org.uk
Private Blood Tests
As an NHS organisation we are not able to see patient’s for private blood tests.
If a patient would like to have a blood test done privately, they will need to contact the organisation that has requested a sample and arrange for the test to be made through that organisation.
For all registered patients at York Street Medical Practice requiring a blood test under the NHS, please be aware that these tests MUST be requested by one of our clinician’s either following a consultation or as part of on-going disease management.
