Contraceptive Pill

We issue prescriptions for a twelve month supply of contraceptive pills. Prescriptions will be sent electronically to your nominated pharmacy after your review with the nurse. You should allow up to 48 hours before collecting your medication. We no longer issue paper prescriptions at the time of your review.

These time periods may be less than 12 months depending on your medical history and will be for a maximum of three months if you change your pill.

Each year you will be required to attend a face to face appointment with one of our nurses to undergo a pill check. This is an important part of your prescribing regime designed to ensure your clinical safety. It may be unsafe in certain cases to take the pill for a prolonged period without having your health needs assessed.

We ask that patients are proactive in contacting us prior to running out of their pills. If you give us plenty of time to issue another prescription or to complete your annual review, you should not need to find yourself in the position of running out of pills.

Unfortunately we are no longer in a position to issue an emergency supply of one month’s pills to last you until your review has been undertaken. We will obviously do our best to arrange an appointment for your review as soon as we can. However, please be aware that responsibility for ensuring that you do not run out of contraception lies with you. Please therefore give us plenty of notice to help you manage your contraception regime.
